You may have read one of our other blogs about carpet types and flooring styles.
But, the question still remains. Which carpet will be best for your home and family? The first step in choosing a carpet is to determine a budget. In our market, we see three types of carpet polyester, nylon, and wool. Polyester will typically be the most affordable. Nylon and polyester will overlap to some degree. And wool will be the most expensive.
If budget is your key factor in choosing, go for a higher end polyester or budget nylon. In flooring, you mostly get what you pay for. There’s a reason that the big box store is selling a certain carpet for “x” amount of dollars. Even though they do buy bulk nationwide, and get a good price from the manufacturer, a carpet store that knows their stuff can usually compare better than a big box store.

Back to our subject. If you feel that you can’t afford anything but a super budget polyester. You need to ask yourself why. Are you selling the home and just need the carpet to look good until the sale? Okay, that’s one acceptable reason. There are not many others. If you plan on staying in your home for any amount of time spend only a couple extra dollars and buy a decent polyester or get into a nylon. Your carpet will look much better and last much longer. Particularly with regular cleanings.
What if budget isn’t a big factor? Definitely, go for a nylon or wool. Wool is an amazing carpet that can last for decades. But it you’re worried about staining, stick with a nylon.
